Tesla are making huge waves in the energy and technology industries, unveiling innovative products, ideas and concepts to the world as well as hurling them into space. But what is it like to work for a company whose CEO is now regarded more of a maverick and celebrity than scientist, who makes bets with governments and hits the headlines as much for his behaviour as for Tesla’s inventions? Tesla is based in Palo Alto, California but employs more than 35,000 people around the world, developing, making and selling their electric cars, batteries, solar panels and more.

Mission Statement

“Tesla’s mission is to accelerate the world’s transition to sustainable energy,” it says on the company’s website. They aim “to create an entire sustainable energy ecosystem… enabling homeowners, businesses, and utilities to manage renewable energy generation, storage, and consumption.” The clean, green goal behind Tesla and their industry changing methods makes them an exciting company to work for, as well as a company to be proud of working for. Elon Musk, the company’s CEO is definitely a hit with his workforce, on job review site Glassdoor, 86% respondents “Approve of CEO” giving him a higher rating than the average of 68%. Musk also enjoys incredible approval from his staff over at SpaceX, where he has a CEO approval rating of 96%

Company Culture

Indeed, working for a company that shares the beliefs, attitudes and values is important for most people, and a high-profile figurehead helps to drive interest in the brand both as a potential employee and as a potential customer. Tesla and SpaceX both benefit from a forward-thinking “company culture” that seeks to improve the way the world works, and Elon Musk’s frequent public acts of philanthropy certainly help that culture to flourish.

Most large companies these days have mission statements and company cultures that they follow to some degree, but it’s the big, high profile players such as Tesla that help a real shift to practice what you preach. Google and Facebook are famous for having ‘fun’ offices, which has led to numerous iterations in all sorts of industries, with slides, pool tables and break out rooms appearing in offices from accountancy firms to tech start-ups. Employers copying the big companies to create modern and sustainable workplaces are changing the way we work, and it has benefits both ways – studies show a happy workforce are 12% more productive
