What Does the 22nd Century Have In Store For Mankind?

On 21st October 2015, movie fans around the world celebrated 'Back to the Future Day'. It was an opportunity for us to reflect on the point in time that Michael J Fox's character, Marty McFly, travels to during the 1989 film Back to the Future II.

In the film, writer Bob Gale and director Robert Zemeckis make numerous predictions about the way we would be living. Some of those predictions included:

  • Self-tying shoes
  • Hoverboards
  • Flying cars
  • Fingerprint and eyeball scanners
  • The internet

Whilst some of those predictions may have been a little wide of the mark, it is possible to see elements of others in our modern lives. With that in mind, it is interesting to consider what those people living in the 22nd century can expect to see - something which Samsung-owned internet of things company, SmartThings, hasbeen trying to predict.

The SmartThings Future Living Report

SmartThings is a company which specialises in creating smart homes, where everyday objects help to make lives easier. In their recent SmartThings Future Living Report, they make predictions as to what we can expect to see a century from now.

Some of the more spectacular predictions include:

  • Super Skyscrapers: It is suggested that new materials will see humans creating towering mega structures which will dwarf the likes of London's Shard.
  • Earth-scrapers: In the same way that sky scrapers tower above us, it is thought than in a century's time humans will be able to live in Earth-scrapers - buildings reaching up to 25 storeys underground.
  • Bubble Cities: Underwater 'bubble cities' will help to make the depths suitable for human habitation.

"The smartphone revolution is already ushering in the smart home revolution, which will have massively positive implications on how we live. Our homes are becoming smarter and can now detect the presence of things like people, pets, smoke, humidity, lighting and moisture. And this is just the beginning." - James Monighan, SmartThings UK Managing Director.
