How East Anglia ONE Can Make the East a Centre of Excellence

Posted on: 14/10/2016
Offshore wind turbines

You may not be aware, but the East Anglian coast offers some of the best conditions for the development of wind energy. For that reason, companies such as ScottishPower Renewables (SPR) are investing significant amounts of money over the coming year’s harnessing this energy source – including the development of the East Anglia One wind farm.

The East Anglia One project is the first of four wind farms being constructed by ScottishPower Renewables which will transform energy production in the Southern North Sea over the next decade.

About East Anglia ONE

  • Expected to be completed in 2020
  • Will consist of 102 Siemens wind turbines
  • Could create as many as 3,000 jobs
  • At least half of the £2.5bn investment will be spent in the UK
  • The turbines will generate 714 megawatts – enough energy to power half a million homes

East Anglia ONE Project Director, Charlie Jordan, explained:

“East Anglia ONE will deliver substantial environmental benefits for the UK, it will stimulate considerable UK investment, and it will support thousands of jobs. Offshore wind has proven itself as a technology that works, and the more offshore wind capacity we have in the UK, the more secure our energy supplies will be. East Anglia has some of the best conditions anywhere in the world for the development of offshore wind, and we are fully committed to the region, with future developments already in the pipeline.”

The project is expected to generate significant investment for the East Anglian economy, including a £25m deal with the Port of Lowestoft. It is from here that the turbines will be constructed and operated over a 30 year period.

Turn the East Coast into an Offshore Wind ‘Centre of Excellence

Following a visit to Germany to visit the Wikinger wind farm, which was a forerunner to the East Anglia ONE project, Richard Goffin of Peel Ports Great Yarmouth urged the energy firms of Norfolk and Suffolk to work together to make the project a success and attract developers for further projects that will secure jobs in the region for many years to come. He told the Eastern Daily Press:

“If we miss this we have only ourselves to blame: it’s all in our hands. We need to turn the east coast into a centre of excellence for offshore wind. I think with our range, we could support the Hornsea wind farm off Humberside, but we also believe we can take on Dutch, German and Belgian projects as well. There are some quite large projects off the west coast of continental Europe, and Great Yarmouth is the closest point on the east coast.”

At People with Energy we are always looking to be actively involved when it comes to the recruitment for projects of this kind. In our recent case study blog, we demonstrated our capabilities and can assist our clients at every stage of the process – from initial turbine construction and installation through to the ongoing maintenance phase.

You can view all of the vacancies we are currently recruiting for by visiting our Jobs Database. Alternatively, submit a copy of your CV to cvs@peoplewithenergy.co.uk and one of our consultants will be in touch to discuss suitable roles.
