Case Study: Dudgeon Offshore Wind Farm

Posted on: 09/09/2016

The Dudgeon Offshore Wind Farm is a £1.5 billion project which will harness the energy of offshore wind to power more than 410,000 homes in the UK. Situated about 20 miles off the coast of Cromer in Norfolk, the 402MW wind farm was given consent in 2012 has is scheduled to be fully operational by the end of 2017. At People with Energy we are delighted to have been heavily involved throughout the construction and installation phases of this award winning project.

In the early stages, we recruited a number of high calibre candidates to work on the construction of the four-legged yellow substation jacket at Sembmarine SLP in Lowestoft. In April the finished structure was loaded on to a barge and transported up the coast in preparation for installation. The jacket is a 48 metre structure weighing 1500 tonnes and in May it was sunk to the seabed using suction bucket technology – the first such use of this technology in the UK.

Speaking about the project, Sembmarine SLP Managing Director Paul Thompson said “the Dudgeon Offshore wind project is very important, not only for the SLP team, but also for the local and UK economy.”

With the jacket in place, work was able to begin on the installation of the four-deck topside – also constructed by Sembmarine SLP on behalf of Siemens Transmission. One of the companies behind the project, Statoil, shared the following timelapse video of the topside platform being fitted onto the jacket.

As part of our partnership with Sembmarine we have supplied riggers, electrician and platers to undertake the installation of services, such as the electrics, to the substation. During this work, the team will be staying offshore on the A2Sea jack-up Sea Challenger accommodation vessel.

This project, which has recently been recognised with a 'Best Energy Project' award from the EEEGR, is an example of how People with Energy have the contacts and resources to assist with every stage of a project. In the case of the Dudgeon Offshore Wind Farm, we have been involved with both construction and installation, and if required have the candidates and resources to provide support with ongoing maintenance of the turbines and other administration roles.
